Transferring water to the reservoir

To fill the reservoir and provide the required amount of water to homes and businesses, we’ll need to draw water from more than one source.

Based on what we’ve learned from technical studies, and feedback received during our phase two consultation, we are confident that we can secure all the water needed to fill the reservoir from excess water in the River Trent and River Witham during periods of high flows.

This means we will no longer need to use water from the South Forty Foot Drain, as previously outlined in our phase two proposals.

River Witham

The water we use from the River Witham will be transferred directly to the reservoir via an underground pipeline. We will be consulting on the proposed corridor within which the new pipeline could be located during our phase three consultation.

River Trent

When we need to more water than the amount we can sustainably use from the River Witham, we’ll need to use water from the River Trent, which we’re proposing to transfer to the River Witham using existing waterways as well as new infrastructure. Our proposals include infrastructure to collect the water, treat it if required and transfer it by pipeline into the Fossdyke, from where it would flow into the River Witham.

Having the option to use water from both sources if we need to means that we’ll be able to secure a resilient supply.
